Day 9 Trains & Porphyry Gulch
This was supposed to be the day I rode the Durango Silverton Steam Train. Plans change. That will now be tomorrow. Today I will drive to Silverton and once there. I will then drive up Porphyry Gulch Trail, and hike up to Bullion King Lake. Just a coincidence I was leaving the hotel at the same time the train was. So had to take some photos! There is a really good thing about taking photos of the train. It’s not going very fast. So you can stop and take some photos and then blast off down the road in the car to another spot and take more photos. I knew there was a good spot just before the train comes into Silverton. So I camped out there for a bit, and got a couple of good shots as the train crosses the Animas River. After the train photo session it was off to Silverton for lunch. As a slightly touristy area they do have good food choices. Porphyry Gulch is just super scenic. On the way up I got the drone out for a couple of shots. One side benefit of the drone is for recon. The road going up is all one lane. So I used the drone to not only take photos and video, but to look ahead to see if anyone was coming down the hill as I was trying to go up. When I went up they were doing some sort of mine or hill stabilization work. So It was a little longer hike to get to my objective. That was Bullion King Lake. I think I was up there for something like 3 hours and there was no one around! Had the place totally to myself.
